Connor and Campisano claim their first wins of 2017 at Hummingbird Speedway.
A beautiful, fall-like Saturday night welcomed fans and drivers from all over the area, even New York, back to Hummingbird Speedway for another great night of racing. Drivers claiming checkered flags on the night included: Nick Erskine from Bells Landing in the Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair Semi-Late Models, Brandon Connor from DuBois in the Street Stocks, Paul Kot from Brockway in the BWP Bats Super Late Models, Dustin Challingsworth from St. Marys in the Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stocks, and John Campisano from Punxsutawney in the Aaron's of DuBois Front-Wheel Drive Four-Cylinders. Trophies for the evening were presented to the winners by the Maines family in memory of William Maines.
Kevin Dickson and Josh Henry led the Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair Semi-Late Models trackside for their opening 20-lap feature race. After four early caution flags that kept the race from completing a lap, Dickson pulled out to the early lead over Henry as the race saw it's first extended green flag run of the night. B.J. Hudson and Dom Surra both worked their way around Henry for the second and third positions as Dickson continued to lead. Surra would have a short night as his car came to a stop in turns one and two with a mechanical failure, bringing out the yellow once again. That would give the third spot to Lester Hudson on the restart behind Dickson and B.J. Hudson. On the restart, Dickson jumped out to the lead as B.J. and Lester Hudson battled hard for the second position. A hard-charging Nick Erskine worked his way up through the field and passed Lester Hudson for the third spot. Erskine then challenged B.J. Hudson for the second spot as Dickson continued to lead. The race would see it's final caution flag with just a few laps remaining, bunching the field back up. On the final restart, Dickson and Erskine fought hard for the lead. Erskine was able to use the low line to his advantage in turns three and four on the last lap to get around Dickson and pick up the win as Dickson spun out coming off of turn four. B.J. Hudson, Henry, Lester Hudson, and Dickson rounded out the top 5. Josh Henry and Dom Surra won the heat races.
Kyle Shannon and Jim Bloom led the Street Stocks to the track for their 20-lap feature event. Shannon jumped out to the early lead on the start as both Rich Howell and Brandon Connor worked their way around Bloom for second and third respectively. Shannon continued to lead as the laps clicked away. Howell then began to close in on Shannon for the lead as the race neared it's halfway mark. As Shannon and Howell were battling for the lead, the third place car of Brandon Connor started to close in on the front two. Connor worked his way around Howell for the second spot and began to set his sights on the leader. Shannon pulled to the outside of a lapped car on the backstretch a few laps later and hit the outside wall, retiring him for the evening. That gave the lead to Connor with Howell in second once again and Sammy Swauger in third with just a few laps remaining. On the final restart, Connor jumped out to the lead with Howell behind. Howell didn't have enough in the closing laps as Connor held on to pick up his first win of 2017. Howell, Matt Krause, Swauger, and Bloom rounded out the top 5. Howell and Connor won the heat races.
Joe Layfield and Scott Alvetro led the BWP Bats Super Late Models trackside for their 25-lap feature race. A quick lap one caution involving the polesitter, Joe Layfield, would keep the field close and give the top spot to Jeff Taylor. On the following restart, Alvetro jumped out to the early lead with Taylor and others following close behind. A hard-charging Paul Kot worked his way up through the field and passed Taylor for second, setting his sights on Alvetro. A few laps later, Kot caught Alvetro and battled with him for a couple laps until Kot got around Alvetro to take the lead. Kot checked out on the field as the race passed the halfway mark. Kot continued to lead until a spin in turn 4 brought the field back together. On the final restart of the race, Kot checked out on the field once again and there was no looking back in the closing laps as Kot held on to pick up the win. Alvetro, Denny Fenton, Steven Scaife, and Jason Dobson rounded out the top 5. Kot and Chris Farrell won the heat races.
Zack Gustafson and Dalton Gustafson led the Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stocks to the track for their 15-lap feature event. Zack Gustafson had the early lead through a few early caution flags. A hard-charging Dustin Challingsworth was able to sneak a pass in for the lead as Mike Anderson moved into second before another caution would bunch things up. On the restart, a charging Josh Fields, who started last, made the pass on Anderson and took the second spot. Challingsworth and Fields battled for the lead until a caution for a spin in turn 4 brought the field back together. Challingsworth and Fields continued to battle each other valiantly for the lead on the restart. One more caution would come out but that didn't phase Challingsworth as he held on to pick up the win. Fields, Anderson, Dalton Gustafson, and Zack Gustafson rounded out the top 5. Fields and Anderson won the heat races.
Ryan Lippert and John Campisano led the Aaron's of DuBois Front-Wheel Drive Four-Cylinders trackside for their 12-lap feature race. Campisano jumped out to the early lead as Eric Luzier and Jimmy Ogden worked their way around Lippert to take the second and third positions respectively. Campisano continued to lead as the laps clicked away with Luzier and Ogden following behind. Randy Albert charged up through the pack and passed Ogden for the second spot a few laps later. But no one had anything for Campisano in the closing laps as he held on to pick up his first win of 2017. Luzier, Albert, Ogden and Tanner Lansberry rounded out the top 5. Luzier and Albert won the heat races.
