Weekly Race Report
Hummingbird Speedway
July 13, 2013
By: Randy Albert

Saturday evening brought another night of competitive racing action to the Hummingbird Speedway in Falls Creek, PA.  Eric Moore from Frenchville edged out Derek Rodkey from Osceola mills in the BWP Bats Steel Block Late Model class.  In a photo finish Ed Connor out of DuBois and Skip Lindemuth from Hazen dueled to a near dead heat but Connor came out on top in the Warrior Energy Services Street Stock division.  In the Pure Stock class Devin Lewis from Weedville made it win number three.  The Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinders had two feature events this week.  In the make-up feature from last week Cory Reitz from Brockway took home his first career win.  Matt Bryant from Weedville was back in the winner’s circle with win number two in the second event for the class.

Normally the Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinders take the stage at the end of the night but due to last week’s rain shortened event their make-up feature was first on the card.  Rusty Murray from Mayport and Cory Reitz from Brockway were in the front row to start the race.  Reitz moved to the lead going into turn one with Randy Albert from Morrisdale in tow.  On the back stretch Matt Bryant and Albert slipped by Murray with Aaron Hill from Brookville close behind.  Reitz held the lead as Albert began to pressure Bryant.  Also coming into the picture in the fifth position was Steven Hill from Brookville.  Albert slipped under Bryant to make the pass with Bryant coming back to try the low line coming out of turn two.  Bryant and Albert got together with Bryant clipping a loader tire and Albert going airborne over one.  Albert continued on in the second position but Bryant had to pit with mechanical problems.  On the restart Reitz chose the outside line giving Albert the low groove.  Albert jumped to the lead followed by Aaron Hill and Steven Hill with Reitz continuing to use the outside.  Reitz got a good run off of turn four and ducked to the inside coming out of turn two to retake the third and second positions.   Albert then slid high in turn three opening the door for Reitz to retake the lead.  Reitz held on for the closing laps to take his first career win followed by Albert, Aaron Hill, Steven Hill, and Zach Lindemuth from Brockway.

Heat race winners on July 6 were Matt Bryant and Cory Retiz.

The BWP Bats Steel Block Late Models made their way onto the track after the remaining heat races were completed with Eric Moore from Frenchville flanked by Rick Maxim out of Reynoldsville.  Moore quickly moved out to the lead and to the high side cushion as Derek Rodkey from Osceola Mills took advantage of the low opening to challenge Maxim for second.  A caution reset Rodkey into third place with Bob Connor from DuBois and Dwayne Brooks out of Falls Creek close behind.  Brooks managed to squeeze between Rodkey and the infield tires to move into third and put the chase on Maxim in second just as Maxim slowed coming out of turn four with mechanical problems.  Brooks was clear to have a go at Moore with Rodkey waiting for the opportunity to make his own move.  Brooks made a few attempts on the inside but couldn’t make it stick.  Rodkey moved to the outside lane and regained his advantage over Brooks taking the second position away from him.  From that point on it was Moore and Rodkey swapping places; Moore on the cushion and Rodkey making up ground in the turns but not enough to take the lead.  Behind them Brooks had his hands full with Bob Connor for a couple of laps but pulled away after a few laps.  As the laps wound down it looked like Rodkey might stand a chance on the inside but Moore powered back into the lead on each lap coming out of turn four.  Lap traffic slowed Rodkey’s pursuit of Moore toward the end of the race and the checkered flag flew on a well-earned win by Eric Moore.

Heat race winners included Derek Rodkey and Rick Maxim.

The Warrior Energy Services Street Stocks have been putting on quite a show for the racing fans each week at Hummingbird and tonight would be no different.  Team Connor out of DuBois with Brandon on the inside and Ed on the outside led the field to Bob Sullinger’s green flag to start the race.  The familiar cars of Skip Lindemuth from Hazen and Bruce Hartzfeld out of Stump Creek filled their rear deck as the racers worked through a number of cautions with the Connor duo maintaining their positions at the front.  Ed managed to move out to a slight lead with Lindemuth working on Brandon Connor for the second spot.  Brandon was able to fend off Lindemuth for the moment hooked on the back bumper of Ed.  It was still anyone’s race as Hartzfeld stayed within striking distance of the leaders watching Lindemuth and the Connors take up the real estate at the front.  Cautions continued to plague the event as Lindemuth finally showed his cards pulling past Brandon Connor to challenge for the lead.  He slipped under Ed Connor and had the position for a number of circuits and cautions with Ed and Brandon in tow.  Behind them Joe Kot of DuBois was looking under Hartzfeld when Brandon Connor lost the handle in turns one and two just as Ed Connor was looking under Lindemuth to retake the lead.  It looked like Lindemuth had a slight advantage but if you know Ed Connor, you know he doesn’t give up and lap after lap he put the nose of the car on the left rear quarter panel of the Lindemuth car gaining a slight advantage each time.  It set up a final shoot out with Connor nosing under Lindemuth in turns one and two and the ensuing drag race down the back stretch.  The two were glued together, side by side through three and four and on to the waving checkered flag.  The winner by a whisker was declared to be Ed Connor and from all angles it was hard to tell.  Another great Street Stock ending for the racing fans at Hummingbird Speedway.

Heat races were won by Skip Lindemuth and Ed Connor.

Pure Stocks took to the track for their feature event.  Devin Lewis from Weedville and Doug Surra from its northern suburb of Kersey made up the front row for the feature race.  Lewis edged out to the lead as Surra and Mike Anderson from DuBois followed in second and third respectively.  The races only caution reset the field allowing Surra to challenge Lewis racing door handle to door handle.  It took a couple laps but Lewis again edged out to the lead followed by Surra, then Anderson, with Shawn Munoz from Punxsutawney and Dalton Gustafson from Weedville rounding out the top five.  Mike Miller from Rockton began to challenge Gustafson on the outside finally making the pass at the half way point.  As the race wore on, Lewis stretched out a five to seven car length lead with none of his competitors able to mount a challenge.  He went on to win his third race of the season.

Heat race winners included Devin Lewis and Doug Surra.

The Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinders were back out on the track for their second feature race of the night.  Matt Bryant from Weedville and Steven Hill from Brookville lined up to lead 18 cars to the green flag.  Hill made a move to the front on the back stretch followed closely by Jody Frantz out of Luthersburg.  Frantz dropped to the inside of Hill as Bryant began to work the high line trying to pass Hill.  Behind them Zach Lindemuth out of Brockway and Randy Albert from Morrisdale were side by side followed by Aaron Hill from Brookville and Cory Reitz from Brockway who had moved up from his thirteenth place starting position.  Frantz had the field covered by about ten car lengths and Bryant managed to get by Hill to take second.  Lapped traffic began to play a role in what seemed to be an open and shut case.  With four laps to go Frantz and a slower car got together at the end of the front stretch launching Frantz into the air and his car turning into the outside turn one guide rail.  On the restart it was Bryant, Steven Hill, Albert, Reitz and Aaron Hill.  Bryant had a slight edge over the challengers.  It was a tight battle behind him with Albert dropping low under Reitz and Hill.  Reitz and Albert got together in turn three causing Albert to slide sideways relinquishing the positions and trying to make up ground.  Reitz and Hill battled for second in the closing laps as Bryant held on for the win followed by Steven Hill, Reitz, Albert, and Aaron Hill.

Front Wheel Drive Heat Race winners included Cory Reitz, Jody Frantz, and Steven Hill.

Next Saturday night is Kid’s Banner Night.  Children are encouraged to make a banner of their favorite car and driver with prizes for all participants and the winners of the competition.  Watch for the appearance of the PRO Ministries full size Late Model Simulator car in August.  Kids and Adults alike can enjoy the racing experience, do a little “rubbin is racin”, not spend a penny to give it a try, or have to worry about fixing the car for next week.

Hummingbird Speedway has been the place for competitive short track racing each week in the Central Pennsylvania area.  The owners and management work diligently to put on a family friendly, economical show for racing fans each week.  Steel Block Late Models, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinders will make up next week’s program.    Visit the speedway web site at www.hummingbirdspeedway.com for details on next week’s race, point standings, weekly photographs, and more.
