Dwayne Brooks takes it to the bank with a big win on the track and the team sponsored fund raiser for the Children's Tumor Foundation. Fans anted up as drivers passed the helmets to raise much needed funds for research for Neurofibromatoses. Paige Doan, a 2 1/2 year old with the disease, and her family were the focus of a special night. The fans kicked in $1,614.37 with the Brockway American Legion upping the ante another $1,000. Life~Stone Christian Church from Philipsburg helped the cause with another $500 and special gifts were given by the Rodkey Racing Team and others who donated their winnings to support the effort to find a cure.   It was a great night for a difficult disease and a great effort by the Brooks Racing Family capping it off in style with a stellar run.

In the Warrior Energy Services Street Stock class Ed Connor from DuBois was in the right place at the right time to capitalize on the misfortune of others taking his second win in as many weeks.  The Pure Stock winner was Doug Surra from Kersey who also made the best of someone else’s misfortune taking win number two for the year.  The Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinder winner was John Campisano from Punxsutawney in his first win of the season and the fifth different winner in five races.

The BWP Bats Steel Block Late Models began the evening’s main events with Bob Connor from DuBois on the pole and Dwayne Brooks to his right for the start of the race.   Brooks took to an early lead making the car high and wide with the look of a man on a mission.  Capping off the fundraiser with a win just may have been that mission.  Behind him Connor was contending with Paul Kot from Brockway, Rick Maxim from Reynoldsville and Eric Moore out of Frenchville.  This was Eric’s first shake down run this year in an always meticulously prepared car.  A long green flag run combined with Brook’s always smooth driving style made it look easy as he stretched the lead out to nearly half the track.  Maxim had managed to work his way past Connor and last week’s winner, Derek Rodkey from Osceola Mills was in the fourth spot by mid race.  It looked like Brooks had it sealed up but Maxim was beginning to gain ground and Rodkey was strong again this week making the pass on Connor into third.  The field would get one last chance to try to best Brooks as a late race caution brought them back together but it was not to be.  Brooks flipped the switch and was off to the races again.  Rodkey used the opportunity to pull under Maxim and they battled side by side for a number of laps until Maxim slid high coming out of turn two and lost some momentum giving up the position.  From there out it was all Dwayne Brooks as the familiar green and white car took him to his second win of the season.

Heat Race Winners included Bob Connor and Dwayne Brooks.

The Warrior Energy Services Street Stock feature proved to be a double heartbreaker with Bruce Hartzfeld and Brandon Connor on the front row for the start of the race.  Hartzfeld is from Stump Creek and Connor from DuBois.  Hartzfeld and Connor stayed side by side as did Steve Arthurs from Falls Creek and Fuzzy Fields out of Brockway just behind the leaders.  Connor had a slight advantage using the high line to make the pass on Hartzfeld.  Arthurs followed Connor against the cushion and moved into the second position.  Fields was holding his own in fourth but with heavy pressure from Joe Kot from DuBois, Skip Lindemuth from Hazen, and last week’s winner, Ed Connor also from DuBois who had moved up from his thirteenth place starting position.  Brandon Connor and Arthurs were putting on another great Street Stock show with Arthurs first on Connor’s tail then challenging for the lead using the low side.  As the two put on the show Ed Connor moved up into the third position overtaking both Fields then Hartzfeld.  Arthurs was putting together another good run when he lost the handle in turn three handing the second position to Ed Connor.  It looked like another Connor versus Connor race but this time Brandon had the outside advantage with Ed making the best of the inside line.  Ed had a slight advantage in the corner but Brandon used the momentum to take the lead each time coming off of turn four.  The scenario was exactly the same as last week’s race but the positions were switched.  The excitement ended when Brandon slowed on the back stretch due to a flat tire with three laps to go putting an end to the family feud until next week.   Ed had a seven car length lead at the wave of the checkered flag.  He was followed across the line by Hartzfeld and Joe Kot who just edged out Skip Lindemuth for third.

Street Stock heat race winners included Ed Connor and Steve Arthurs.

Dave Kohler from Rockton and Devin Lewis out of Weedville led the Pure Stock competitors onto the racing surface for the start of their feature event.  Kohler and Lewis had a spirited duel going and Doug Surra from Kersey kept it interesting by putting the nose of his machine up alongside them in the turns.  A caution reset the field with Lewis on the bottom and it proved to be to his advantage.  Surra was busy working under Kohler as Shawn Munoz from Punxsutawney watched the action from the fourth position.  Kohler looped his car in turn three bringing out the caution and placing Surra on the outside of Lewis for the restart.  Lewis proved to be too strong and all Surra could do was chase the leader.  Surra managed to stay close and Colton Joiner from DuBois worked his way past Munoz into third, close enough to see the leaders but didn’t seem to be able to make any more forward progress.  Surra managed to regroup and get the nose of his car under Lewis’s machine a couple of times after a late race restart but he couldn’t make it stick.  Lewis went on to take the checkered flag but wins and losses don’t always happen on the track.  Post-race scaling revealed the Lewis machine to be light and the win was handed to Surra.  It was a disappointing end to a nice run for Devin Lewis that resulted in a surprise victory for Doug Surra.

The Pure Stock heat races were won by Devin Lewis and Dave Kohler.

The Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinders were the final event of the evening with Randy Albert from Morrisdale on the pole and John Campisano out of Punxsutawney on the outside pole.  Albert jumped to an early lead but a caution resulted in a full restart.  On the restart Campisano ducked low under Albert in turn two taking the lead.  Albert kept the pressure on Campisano but couldn’t gain an advantage to retake the lead.  Behind them Cory Reitz from Brockway, Matt Bryant from Weedville and Bob Seiger from Richmond Hills, Georgia were enjoying a three wide excursion trying to gain positions and try their hand at challenging for the lead.  A caution brought the field back together but a long green flag run to the end worked to Campisano’s advantage.  He stretched his lead out to seven to ten car lengths over Albert, with an equal amount back to Bryant in the third position.  Reitz and Seiger stayed close to Bryant but couldn’t mount a charge for the position.  Campisano kept it clean and fast going on to take his first win of the season.

Cory Reitz and John Campisano both won the heat races in the division.

The staff and management would like to thank everyone who turns out each week to support local racing. Sponsors, car owners, drivers and track personnel all come together each week to make an evening of entertainment possible for fans of local dirt track racing.  Hummingbird Speedway has been, and will continue to be, a source for that entertainment.  They provide a family friendly environment for stock car racing in central Pennsylvania.

Next week is a regular event at the speedway featuring the Steel Block Late Models, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinders.  Racing Pioneers night is planned for June 15, 2013.  Visit the speedway web site at www.hummingbirdspeedway.com for details on next week’s race, point standings, weekly photographs, and more.
